My Little Pony Friends Forever #37

Rarity is excited to work on Sapphire Shores’ next big concert! What should be a dream job could turn into a nightmare when Rarity discovers that she’ll need to work closely with a pony with a checkered past… Trixie!

For being the next to the last issue of the Friends Forever run, it wasn’t really that great.  The art wasn’t the worst that the series has offered, but it certainly wasn’t inspired either.  Not to mention the plot doesn’t make a lot of sense.  Sure, Trixie did some pretty crappy things, and I’m not sure where this takes place in relation To Where And Back Again, but we do know that by this point Starlight Glimmer practically lives with Twilight.  For Rarity to just completely dismiss Trixie out of hand doesn’t go with previous plot developments.  Not to mention Rarity saying she didn’t know to make the dress shorter and less flammable because she hadn’t listened to Trixie.  Trixie had said numerous times that she was working on fireworks for the show and Rarity even flippantly remarked on it.  Hopefully, the final one will be able to make up for this train wreck.

Black Panther World of Wakanda #4

“DAWN OF THE MIDNIGHT ANGELS” CONTINUES! With their king shamed and their queen dead, Ayo and Aneka take justice into their own hands….Learn the secrets behind the events that led into the 2016 sales smash BLACK PANTHER #1!

I’m going to be sad to see these ladies go, but I suppose at some point we will run into the beginning of the 2016 series, which is likely going to be very soon.  My biggest issue with this series is the fact that we can never seem to have the lesbian couples be happy in comics.  Just let the wlw be happy for once, that’s all I ask.  Also, clearly we know that Aneka and Ayo don’t quite die yet since they’re still kicking in Black Panther.

Poe Dameron #11

Things are heating up for Poe Dameron and super-spymaster C-3PO! The First Order is on their tail…and Terex’s evil cronies as well. Not to mention… Who’s feeding information to the First Order in the first place?

My hopes and dreams for Kare surviving this series have just circled down the toilet.  I would much rather have her alive and evil than dead, but there doesn’t seem to be much of another explanation for her absence from The Force Awakens.  Unless she was pregnant.  Let’s go back to the pregnant theory.  Unfortunately, Poe is still being a poor excuse for a Han Solo wannabe.

Also, I sense an FN-2187 cameo sometime in the near future.  Then again, I also believed Kare was the traitor in a blind hope that she was still alive.

Harley Quinn (2016 -) #14

“RED MEAT”! Red Tool lives up to his name and Poison Ivy drops by as Harley investigates what is happening to New York’s disappearing homeless population!

Is this the official plot line for the entire arc, or what’s going on here?  I’ve had no Red Tool, no Poison Ivy, and the homeless are just starting to disappear.  In fact, my issue is all about a giant blue naked man coming out of the underworld who sets off on a quest to overtake Earth.  Like, is that the plot for the next story arc, because I’m pretty sure this one is called Nether Regions.  At least that bit with the Joker is finished.

God Country #2

As Emmett Quinlan attempts to rebuild his family and his home after the devastating tornado that broke them, something otherworldly screams through the sky under a banner of WAR. The GODS have come to Texas—and they do not intend to leave it empty handed.

I love this series and am intrigued to know what else this magical sword can do for Emmett.  And what it’s going to ask of him in return for all it’s magical powers.

“A FALLEN HOUSE” Maggie leads the survivors from the Hilltop to Alexandria…to see it overrun with the dead. ALSO, HOLY CRAP! THERE ARE TWO ISSUES OF THE WALKING DEAD THIS MONTH!

Rick and Neagan make the world’s worst power couple.  The panel with Andrea on the rearing horse gives me life.  It’s also intriguing to think about where the series could go should Rick come to an untimely demise.  Right now, it looks like they might be setting up for Carl to take over.  But I have a few, better suggestions for them: Andrea, Michonne, Jesus, Maggie.  And then in the aftermath Andrea and Maggie can hook up and become the world’s best power couple to make up for all the weird Neagan Rick stuff going on now.

Black Panther (2016-) #10

RETURN OF THE QUEEN! Shuri is reborn anew… New powers, a new codename and a new target: the Midnight Angels. The newly independent Dora Milaje make their final accord with Tetu and The People…T’Challa takes an audience with the voice of dissent, Changamire. But will both men finally listen to reason?

I can’t believe this is ending.  All the comics I read are ending.  At least I still have The Walking Dead.  Kirkman’s ego is so huge that I’ll probably have The Walking Dead until he dies.  (Note: this is why I will not be surprised when I find out that The Walking Dead has a set end day on Wednesday.)  Ironically, I picked this up the same week as I picked up the second trade of Shuri being the Black Panther, having just been introduced to that arc through the half off table at Pittsburgh Comics.  Now I just need to pick up the first trade to finish that story arc.

In the meantime, I am going to pretend that this is not ending, as this was my first superhero comic, and eagerly await the movie.

Grimm Vol. 2 #5

The race for the artifact is on and Juliette is charging head first at her real enemy, Adalind! This action-packed finale is filled with chases, fights, and maybe even a few explosions that need to be seen to be believed!

I’ll admit, I have not watched Grimm for a very long time.  Certain events that transpired, but more importantly how the events were handled in the aftermath, left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t watched a single episode since.   I hear its been cancelled.  Much as I once loved the show, I can’t say I’m sorry to see it go.

Grimm Vol 2 on the other hand highlighted everything I loved about Grimm in the first place.  Not only that, it focused entirely on the women of the show, who did get a lot of the short end of the stick during airtime.  It also covers the pivotal time period in which Juliette is just coming into her powers, which probably should have been covered on the show.  I guess that’s the beauty of these tie-in comics.  They can fix things that their respective shows/movies fail to address.  Also, yes, Juliette, punch that bitch!

Wonder Woman (2016-) #15

“THE TRUTH” part one! Diana has finally seen the full scope of how her life and history have been transformed…unfortunately, the knowledge has driven her completely insane!

I love the character of Wonder Woman.  I really do.  But she’s not the only one being driven completely insane.  This whole every other issue story line is driving me absolutely batty!  It’s not a reader friendly format, and I’m still wondering if its worth buying them like this or if I should just save up my reward money and buy the trades as they’re released.

Reborn #4

MILLAR & CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. Bonnie and Tom are chained and dragged to Black Wish Mountain, where they are confronted by a vengeful fi gure from the past. Will they escape to fi nd Harry, or be turned over to Lord Golgotha?

Again with the cat thing?  Seriously, are all cats like this or was it just this one dickish cat that happens to be like this.  I do like that for being a savior figure, Bonnie is not above mass murder.  Sure, they’re evil, but it does add a nice bit of moral ambiguity to the character.  Which is something that is sorely needed at this point.

I’m still standing by my earlier assertion that her husband is evil somewhere in the afterlife.  In fact, what are the chances that he’s going to be that horned evil dude?

Nice ending…. Not.  That was completely horrifying and I’m going to pretend that it never happened.

Friends Forever #36

This is it!  This is what I’ve been waiting for!  I’ve waited years for this! (Years might be a slight exaggeration.)  Ever since I started reading the Friends Forever series, I wanted one with Soarin.  Rainbow Dash was my preferred partner, but I was willing to accept someone else.  Maybe Quibblepants.  That would have been amazing.  My checklist for a Soarin Friends Forever comic included:

  • Soarin rescuing someone, preferably Rainbow Dash if she was the other pony involved
  • Soarin’s Wonderbolt status being called into question
  • Soarin being an all around badass

Oh, look, I got all three of my wishes!

Soarin did rescue Rainbow Dash (finally!) in one of the most beautiful panels that I’ve ever seen.  I’ve been waiting a very long time for Soarin to be the one to do the rescuing.

tumblr_inline_oi5w91o9dv1tjjecv_540

We also had Soarin questioning his own Wonderbolt status, thinking that he’s no longer good enough due to Spitfire trying to replace him during the Equestria games and an off screen show that landed him in a tailspin.   The whole incident leads to a scene with Rainbow Dash offering him encouragement where they’ve taken refugee inside a cave in a dialogue that’s sounds a lot like “You’re the best,” “No, you’re the best.”

It’s a great exchange, though, because the only pony we’ve seen go through Wonderbolt initiation is Rainbow Dash, and I don’t think there was ever a doubt in anyone’s mind that she was going to be a Wonderbolt.  She’s a great flyer, and it’s something that comes easy to her.  Which is great.  But Soarin’s story is a bit different.  Soarin’s story is of a pony who knew he wanted to be a Wonderbolt but he always had to push himself a littler harder if he wanted to be ranked among the best.  And that’s an amazing things for kids to learn.  That natural talent helps, but not everyone is going to pursue their dreams with little ease.  It’s okay if the path you take to get there is a little harder, if you have to work a little more, if you have to dedicate your time to it.    And that it doesn’t diminish your accomplishment.  I mean, Soarin’s the second in command, and Rainbow Dash even calls him the heart of the Wonderbolts.

As for bullet point number three, he was taking on all those dangerous deliveries and did that amazing dive to save Rainbow Dash.

No ships sank or sailed in this issue.  If anything, they decided to go the OT3 route.

Ah, yes, another series that is ending.  That seemed to be the theme of most of the stuff I picked up this week.

Next week is a very special discount issue of The Walking Dead!  I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts about it.

Deadpool the Duck #2 (of 5)

What do you get when you take one cynical anthropomorphic duck (named Howard) and cross it with the smelliest (and most annoying) mercenary in the Marvel Universe? DEADPOOL THE DUCK! When Deadpool is sent on a mission from S.H.I.E.L.D. to capture a high-profile E.T. that is rampaging across the high plains, the snatch-and-grab turns out to be much more complicated than the Merc with a Mouth anticipated. One unfortunate wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time accident later leaves Deadpool and Howard fighting for control of the cutest mercenary the Marvel Universe has ever seen! Brought to you with words by Stuart Moore (CLOAK & DAGGER, THANOS: DEATH SENTENCE Novel) and art by Jacopo Camagni (DEADPOOL’S SECRET SECRET WARS).

This series is weird.  Not bad weird, not yet, anyway, but it’s firmly in the weird category.  I’m mostly concerned about whether Deadpool is really going to make a cap out of Rocket Raccoon or not.  100% here for the Game of Thrones jokes.  We can add Game of Thrones jokes to anything at the moment considering my love-hate relationship with the series is currently set to hate.

Star Wars Doctor Aphra #3

Aphra’s hunt for the Ordu Aspectu has led to the last place she wants to be…an Imperial encampment! The good doctor, her deadly droids and her Wookiee companion are in for trouble…

We need to take more time to acknowledge the WOC in the Star Wars expanded universe.  And by we, I mean LucasFilms.  And by acknowledge I mean they need to start showing up in the movies.  If I see one more post with Padme, Leia, Rey, and Jyn again tagged as the ladies of Star Wars as if they are the only women in the Star Wars universe, I might chuck a book at someone.  I don’t hold the graphics makers entirely responsible.  People shouldn’t have to be invested in the expanded universe just to get some WOC.  I hold LucasFilms entirely responsible.

Anyway, Doctor Aphra is amazing, and I love how its tying together so much using a comic exclusive character.  It’s really a thing of beauty, and the plot is quickly becoming more engrossing than the Poe Dameron series.  That I am still thinking about dropping after last week’s fiasco, so the bar was admittedly set kind of low on that one.

Harley Quinn #12

“JOKER LOVES HARLEY” part two! Don’t ship Joker and Harley too hard! In this issue, the “reformed” Joker deceives Harley, and when that happens, she goes for his throat!

Let’s be real here, DC.  I don’t give a rat’s ass that the Joker loves Harley, and I certainly don’t ship it.  In fact, the only thing I want to see happening between the two of them is her finishing what she started in this one.  Honestly.  Give it a rest already.   I had to get the alternate cover for this one just because it didn’t say Joker loves Harley on it.

Black Panther: World of Wakanda #3

DORA MILAJE NO MORE! T’Challa betrays all of Wakanda, forcing Ayo and Aneka to make the biggest decision of their lives…

Girlfriends on vacation is the best trend to ever come to comics.  It’s so wonderful, I’m not entirely sure anything else happened in this issue.  Yup.  Just girlfriends on vacation being happy together.  As a matter of fact, Harley Quinn should try this tactic again.  I’m sure I’m not alone when I say I would rather read one hundred issues of Harley and Ivy on vacation together instead of one more issue of Joker trying to win Harley back by being “reformed.”  Anyway, World of Wakanda has girlfriends on vacation.

Reborn #2

MILLAR and CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. After her death, Bonnie is reborn in Adystria and has a sword thrust into her hand. As the evils within the Dark Lands get stronger, she is Adystria’s only hope: their savior.

My biggest worry when a new series comes out is how quickly it will fizzle out.  Reborn has continued on strong in the second volume, with enough withheld on how this afterlife works to keep readers coming back for more.   Although, I feel like someone has something against cats, because dogs get to come back as giant armored friends to help you find your missing loved ones, but cats are evil cause you took their testicles.  I’m rather hoping this was just for that particular cat and dog and not all dogs end up in the happy reunion place while all cats turn out evil when they’re dead.

Also, I’m calling it now: her husband went to the bad place.  Don’t have any theories about the mother yet, but give me another issue or so.

Reasons to pick this one up:  It continues to explore an interesting alternative to the afterlife that I still want to sign up for.  I want more details into this universe and how it works and why people enter it at different ages, not necessarily the age they die at and likewise how aging works in this place.

Reasons to avoid:  The cat thing.  People take dog’s testicles too you know.  I mean, are we assuming Cujo got a free pass into the good place just because he was a dog?

Jessica Jones #2

There are so many mysteries to discover in the Marvel Universe and Jessica’s new case may be the most dangerous one. No spoilers, but some of the biggest questions about the new Marvel NOW! are about to be revealed in this very comic.

I had my doubts about this series because they’re pushing the Marvel NOW angle, saying that the greatest reveals of Marvel NOW are going to be in this comic, and I’m not all that interested in reading the entirety of Marvel NOW.  I just don’t have that kind of money, and I don’t know why I should have to suffer just because I happen to dig Jessica Jones.

Thankfully, the Marvel NOW does not seem to be intruding too much on the plot of Jessica Jones.  There’s enough mystery to keep me interested without asking me to read the other series (yet).  That and the beautiful covers push Jessica Jones into the runner up category this week.

Reasons to pick up:  The covers are gorgeous, and the plot is interesting enough to keep me hooked.

Reasons to avoid:  Why can’t Jessica stick the super hero landing?

 Honorable Mention:

422391-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Assassin’s Creed: Locus #3
The streets of Victorian London are a much darker place than the avenues of new York… as Pinkerton agent Tommy Greyling is finding out! Hot on the tail of a murderer, it seems there’s more to this mystery than meets the eye. Luckily for Tommy, he’s in the hands of the Assassin Brotherhood!

I have continued with my streak of collecting the Evie centric covers and hope to get the last one as well.  However, there is not nearly enough Evie in the actual comics, and considering that was why I wanted them in the first place, they’re not really delivering the way I had hoped.

426619-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Grimm Vol. 2 #3
When things have completely spiraled out of control, who can you call on to help set them right? Why the woman who is responsible for putting you in a coma, sleeping with your boyfriend, and turning you into a hexenbiest, of course! Juliette must fight her urges to get feral on Adalind in order to save innocent lives in the team-up we never expected to see.

One of the reasons I quit the show was because of the way the show responded to what Adalind did to Nick.  The fact that the comics are willing to call a spade a spade made me contemplate this as the pick of the week.  But, much as I love to see the women of Grimm coming front and center, I still don’t like Adalind all that much, so it got knocked down to the honorable mention section.

425523-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Black Panther (2016-) #8
VOYAGE INTO THE DJALIA T’Challa’s research and technology takes him to a place that not even THE CREW can follow: THE DJALIA, Wakanda’s collective memory. Just getting there was hard, but finding SHURI across their nation’s past, present and future might turn out to be impossible. Even so, the strain on his Soul-Stalker abilities might tear him apart before he gets very far…

That whole Marvel NOW thing didn’t last very long, so I’m glad I didn’t have to worry about that.  Marvel wants too much of my money, and I’m just not down with that.  Don’t they know I’m broke with student loans to pay?

In an attempt to keep this spoiler free, I will simply have to insist that you read this one.

Voltron: Legendary Defender #4(of 5)

Team Voltron’s quest to save Coran’s life gets extra-complicated when they have to face off against brain-sucking mushrooms, an ancient chess master, and a sphinx’s riddles. Can Pidge lead Voltron through these tests of brains and brawn in one piece?

Okay, so I’m super excited that this was a Pidge-centric one, because I love Pidge and this was a great look inside her mind.   The last three issues of Voltron got me shipping new pairings, so I came to this one prepared to pick up yet another Voltron ship.  I got nothing.  If anything, I got renewed Heith vibes.  I mean, Hunk says the answer to the Sphinx’s riddle is love, Lance says pretty much the same thing, and Keith gets all defensive, like, damn it, Hunk said it first, Lance.  Also, was that a tiny hint of Kallura I picked up at the beginning?  Maybe it was.  It’s one of the few Voltron ships I’m missing out on.

Oh, and how about that Shiro cover for the surprise volume 5 coming out next month?  Beautiful.

Reasons to pick this one up:  Much like we got a glance into the inner workings of Lance’s mind last month, we got to see how Pidge’s brain works this time.  Very analytically, not surprisingly.  Also, it’s good to see Pidge front and center, all things considered.

Reasons to avoid: None.  There are no reasons to avoid Voltron.  It’s amazing.  It’s definitely the distraction every one needs from time to time.

Runner Up:

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #8

NEW STORY ARC STARTS HERE! Agent Terex has sworn vengeance against Poe Dameron! But how does he always seem to know what Black Squadron is doing? Could there truly be a traitor in their midst?

Poe, how many times do I have to tell you, Kare is the traitor?  I don’t like it, and I know you certainly won’t like it, but she is the only one not in the movie.  I for one would much rather have her as a traitor who splits at the end to rejoin with the First Order than have her killed.

On the other hand, Poe is kickboxing and I’m in love.

Reasons to pick up:  Poe kickboxing in that tank top.  I swear, the art is really starting to grow on me or something.  I found it really beautiful this week, maybe because I prefer it to The Force Awakens artwork.

Reasons to avoid:  Agent Terex backstory to this point is rather predictable.  Here’s hoping something comes along to really surprise me.  Like Poe being straight.  Just kidding, I would never want that, not even to break up the monotony.

 Honorable Mention:

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic #48
“Chaos Theory” Part 1 (of 3). The craziest, most epic MLP story yet! Multiple versions of ponies are springing up around town and strange new beasts stalk the land as an orb of energy grows larger in the sky. Twilight and the Princesses have no answers… but Discord might!

My heart breaks for Fluttershy when Discord turns into Accord, it really does.  Also, I can’t help but feel that in a way My Little Pony is still playing the political field when Accord tells the Princesses that they could not possibly have a happy, united kingdom when they had ponies with such different view points, as I have no doubt that individuality will play an important part in the resolution of this story arc.  Also, I’m terribly sad that I did not manage to snag the Princess Luna cover.

425433-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Black Panther: World of Wakanda (2016-) #1
“YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE, LITTLE FLOWER. YOU DESERVED A WAKANDA THAT CHERISHED YOU.” Writer ROXANE GAY (Bad Feminst, Hunger) spins a Wakandan love story — its tenderness matched only by its brutality. You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but in this story they are just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to become Dora Milaje, an elite task force trained to protect the crown at all costs. What happens when your nation needs your hearts and minds, but you already gave them to each other? Illustrated by industry veteran ALITHA E. MARTINEZ (Iron Man, Black Panther). And in a special backup story, acclaimed poet YONA HARVEY (Hemming the Water) explores the true origins of The People’s mysterious leader Zenzi. Black Panther thinks he knows who Zenzi is and how she got her powers, but he only knows part of the story… Illustrated by rising star AFUA RICHARDSON (Genius).

Midnight Angels backstory, Midnight Angels backstory!  I am so hyped for this!  It might have made the pick of the week had Voltron and Poe not come out the same week.

Harley Quinn (2016-) #7

“EAT TO THIS BEAT” part 3! Harley’s punk-rock epic concludes with her and her bandmates in way too deep on their undercover mission to take down a brutal gang of thieves and murderers!

I love Harley Quinn, I really do, but I feel like this series started out strong than fizzled too quickly.  I’m inclined to blame the two week format.  Next issue is apparently the Bahamas issue I was promised, so it might be time for some redemption.

425493-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Star Wars: The Force Awakens Adaptation #6 (of 6)
It’s the Resistance vs the First Order as the attack on Starkiller Base continues! Meanwhile, Rey must use a lightsaber for the first time in a battle against Kylo Ren! Will the Resistance finally find the mysterious location of the vanished Jedi Luke Skywalker? The saga continues!

It’s over!  It’s finally over! I can stop throwing money at this thing every month in the hopes that it will get better.  Spoiler alert: It didn’t.  I love The Force Awakens, but this was basically a play by play retelling of the movie without bringing anything to the table.  It seems rather pointless to have Chuck Wendig’s name as an author credit.  I kept through to the end mostly to see if they rewrote the kiss (both the original script and the book did not have a specified location), but they didn’t.  They kept it on the forehead.  They also appear to have added more Snap and taken out Poe running after Finn’s medcart at the end, provided that’s him up Jessica Pava’s butt towards the end.  For shame.

That is it for this week’s comic pick of the week!  Hopefully sometime in the near future I’ll be able to provide an update on the weeks I missed.

Wacky Raceland #5

A bad batch of mutated mushrooms sends our antiheroes on a white-knuckle trip down memory lane. Flashes of repressed recollections bubble to the surface of the Racers’ fevered brains, and these tantalizing tidbits suggest a single point of origin: a high-tech facility from hell known as the Butcher Shop! Against the advice of the omnipresent Announcer, the Racers roar towards the facility. But will they find answers…or death?

Why must this be ending?  This was the first series I picked up that wasn’t a spin-off or a character I had fallen in love with watching Captain America Civil War (*cough* Black Panther *cough*), and as such it will likely always hold a special place in my heart.  Especially considering it just decided to get really good.

Reasons to pick this one up:  All the drivers are tripping.  While the series has always been entertaining, it took a turn to really good in it’s cliffhanger ending.

Reasons to avoid: It’s a two parter.  If you don’t do well with waiting, I would wait for the final volume to come out.  I have come to the sad conclusion that we are never actually going to get Sergeant Blast backstory, which is a tragedy.

Runner Up:

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #47

Election Part 2: The election race between Filthy Rich and Mayor Mare is closer than expected! With disagreements between friends growing, will the town find a way to unify and chose the right candidate?

The official summary is misleading.  The election race is not close, it’s over and Filthy Rich is the new mayor.  A better summary is “Someone with no political experience gets elected and promises that were made quickly fall apart while life becomes almost unbearable in Ponyville.”  Not exactly subtle, but My Little Pony is well known for hitting the nail on the head.

Reasons to pick up:
Look, it’s the story of what happens when you elect someone into office that has no political experience.  The fallout is real.

Reasons to avoid: It’s like a crossover between Tremors and the 2016 Presidential Election.

 Honorable Mention:

415246-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Assassin’s Creed: Locus #2
Tommy Greyling, a Pinkerton agent in London, is on the tail of a murderer, and out of his element. Lucky for him, Inspector Abberline of Scotland Yard is on hand to show him how things are done in London – with the help of Evie Frye and Henry Green!

I’ve made it my mission to collect all the covers featuring Evie Frye as she is my main reason for reading this.  Which means she needs to be in it more.  I don’t actually care about any of those other people.

411780-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Harley Quinn #6

“EAT TO THIS BEAT” part two! Harley’s carving her way through the rock underground of New York City, looking for the brutal criminals who hurt someone she cared about…unfortunately for Harley, one of the crooks in question has fallen in mad love with her.

I do believe two weeks ago I said that I didn’t need the return of the Joker.  I stand by that assessment.  Although, the final panel of the “superhero and super-villain fetish club” was well worth the rest of it.

385594-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Torchwood #2
Far away from Cardiff and the Hub, Captain Jack and Gwen dive deep to unravel the secrets of an ancient, extinct civilisation, whose colossal megaweapons are being primed to affect the Earth. Caught between human agencies, infiltrating aliens, a unknowing public and an uncertain future, can a Torchwood stripped of its resources and staff still save the day?!

As a patron of all things Torchwood, clearly I had to have the comic written by John Barrowman added to my collection.  Now if only Torchwood hadn’t killed off all my favorite characters, maybe I would be able to get into this more.

413898-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Black Panther #7
THE CREW STARTS NOW! With no one left to trust, T’Challa leans on his day ones: Luke Cage. Misty Knight. Storm. But Wakanda may be too far gone for this all-new, all different CREW.

Look, I love all the characters involved, but I don’t want this tying into whatever the Marvel Now thing is.  I’m very much one of those people who wants to stick with the series that I like and ignore all the rest.  I don’t want to have to read fifty other series just to continue to enjoy Black Panther.  My wallet can’t handle it.

Voltron: Legendary Defender #1 and #2 (of 4)

When Team Voltron takes on a dangerous training mission in deep space, Coran, Princess Allura’s majordomo, is captured by an ancient enemy. It will take teamwork, smarts, and, of course, Voltron, to save their friend’s life.

As Team Voltron searches for a treasure that can settle Coran’s debt and save his life, the beasts they have to fight keep getting bigger and nastier! When a mountain monster has Voltron on the ropes, Hunk realizes they’ll need more than brute strength to stop it.

Look, I know both of these are older, but I jumped on the Voltron bandwagon kind of late. Hunk and Keith need to totally date already.  Since they were my favorites from this week’s haul, they tied for my top pick of the week.  It’s written by the show writers so you don’t have to worry about any moments where the characters don’t feel like themselves.  I don’t know why this just wasn’t an episode, but I guess they make more money by releasing additional material as a comic. The first one is  a great start, but the second one is where this story really starts to shine.  (Which makes it a darn shame that it’s only going to be four volumes long.  I suggest a petition to continue this indefinitely while we’re waiting for season 2).  Benefits of the second issue definitely include the team deciding that maybe its better if they listen to Hunk, unlike the last time with the pirates.

Reasons to pick this one up:  Um, it’s Voltron, and I think we could all use a little more Voltron while waiting for the second season.  Also, Hunk gets to be in the spotlight, which is something that needs to happen more in general.  I vote to promote Hunk to the star of the show.

Reasons to avoid:  Keith, don’t be mean to Hunk.

Black Panther (2016-) #6

RISE OF THE DORA MILAJE! T’Challa’s failures as king are revealed to the UNITED NATIONS! Ayo and Aneka, the Midnight Angels, are courted by Tetu and The People to raise Wakanda to glory, but at what price? The storyline that has critics raving and retailers selling out continues!

I picked up this series after falling in love with T’Challa watching Civil War.  If you aren’t reading this one yet, it’s definitely one to check out for the politics alone.

Reasons to pick up:  The Midnight Angels, who I hear are going to be getting their own series soon, continue to inspire me.  It’s amazing watching all the stories unwinding together, and I’ll probably end up rereading the first five soon.

Reasons to avoid:  You’ve had enough of politics on Facebook and don’t want to think about it during your comic reading time.

Honorable Mentions:

WONDER WOMAN YEAR ONE” part 3!Diana brings Steve back home, but the reception is not what either of them expected. Amid suspicion and a looming threat, the Patrons pay a visit, and new friendships are forged.I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m not as fond of Year One as I am of The Lies.  However, both series have had consistently gorgeous coverart.  Gods as woodland creatures is also a plus.

Something Else I Picked Up This Week:

406380-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Star Wars: The Force Awakens Adaptation #4 (of 6)

Rey, Finn, Han and Chewie have reached Maz Kanata’s castle…but the Force is calling Rey to Luke’s lightsaber! Meanwhile, our heroes have been discovered! The First Order strikes!

Honestly, I’m only still reading this because I’m halfway through and I feel committed now.  Although, there was a whole page dedicated to the one helluva pilot scene, and that pleases me.
