My Little Pony Friends Forever #37

Rarity is excited to work on Sapphire Shores’ next big concert! What should be a dream job could turn into a nightmare when Rarity discovers that she’ll need to work closely with a pony with a checkered past… Trixie!

For being the next to the last issue of the Friends Forever run, it wasn’t really that great.  The art wasn’t the worst that the series has offered, but it certainly wasn’t inspired either.  Not to mention the plot doesn’t make a lot of sense.  Sure, Trixie did some pretty crappy things, and I’m not sure where this takes place in relation To Where And Back Again, but we do know that by this point Starlight Glimmer practically lives with Twilight.  For Rarity to just completely dismiss Trixie out of hand doesn’t go with previous plot developments.  Not to mention Rarity saying she didn’t know to make the dress shorter and less flammable because she hadn’t listened to Trixie.  Trixie had said numerous times that she was working on fireworks for the show and Rarity even flippantly remarked on it.  Hopefully, the final one will be able to make up for this train wreck.

Black Panther World of Wakanda #4

“DAWN OF THE MIDNIGHT ANGELS” CONTINUES! With their king shamed and their queen dead, Ayo and Aneka take justice into their own hands….Learn the secrets behind the events that led into the 2016 sales smash BLACK PANTHER #1!

I’m going to be sad to see these ladies go, but I suppose at some point we will run into the beginning of the 2016 series, which is likely going to be very soon.  My biggest issue with this series is the fact that we can never seem to have the lesbian couples be happy in comics.  Just let the wlw be happy for once, that’s all I ask.  Also, clearly we know that Aneka and Ayo don’t quite die yet since they’re still kicking in Black Panther.

Poe Dameron #11

Things are heating up for Poe Dameron and super-spymaster C-3PO! The First Order is on their tail…and Terex’s evil cronies as well. Not to mention… Who’s feeding information to the First Order in the first place?

My hopes and dreams for Kare surviving this series have just circled down the toilet.  I would much rather have her alive and evil than dead, but there doesn’t seem to be much of another explanation for her absence from The Force Awakens.  Unless she was pregnant.  Let’s go back to the pregnant theory.  Unfortunately, Poe is still being a poor excuse for a Han Solo wannabe.

Also, I sense an FN-2187 cameo sometime in the near future.  Then again, I also believed Kare was the traitor in a blind hope that she was still alive.

Harley Quinn (2016 -) #14

“RED MEAT”! Red Tool lives up to his name and Poison Ivy drops by as Harley investigates what is happening to New York’s disappearing homeless population!

Is this the official plot line for the entire arc, or what’s going on here?  I’ve had no Red Tool, no Poison Ivy, and the homeless are just starting to disappear.  In fact, my issue is all about a giant blue naked man coming out of the underworld who sets off on a quest to overtake Earth.  Like, is that the plot for the next story arc, because I’m pretty sure this one is called Nether Regions.  At least that bit with the Joker is finished.

God Country #2

As Emmett Quinlan attempts to rebuild his family and his home after the devastating tornado that broke them, something otherworldly screams through the sky under a banner of WAR. The GODS have come to Texas—and they do not intend to leave it empty handed.

I love this series and am intrigued to know what else this magical sword can do for Emmett.  And what it’s going to ask of him in return for all it’s magical powers.

“A FALLEN HOUSE” Maggie leads the survivors from the Hilltop to Alexandria…to see it overrun with the dead. ALSO, HOLY CRAP! THERE ARE TWO ISSUES OF THE WALKING DEAD THIS MONTH!

Rick and Neagan make the world’s worst power couple.  The panel with Andrea on the rearing horse gives me life.  It’s also intriguing to think about where the series could go should Rick come to an untimely demise.  Right now, it looks like they might be setting up for Carl to take over.  But I have a few, better suggestions for them: Andrea, Michonne, Jesus, Maggie.  And then in the aftermath Andrea and Maggie can hook up and become the world’s best power couple to make up for all the weird Neagan Rick stuff going on now.

Harley Quinn (2016-) #13

“Joker Loves Harley” finale! Just how did a gentle, “reformed” Joker come to arrive at Harley’s doorstep when everyone believed him dead and gone? The answer’s in this issue-and it’ll shock you!

I was disappointed in this issue.  How many creepy stalkers does Harley Quinn need?  At least this leaves us with one less, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s getting stale.  Next week promises no more Joker for now.  We could keep the Joker away forever, and I would be completely okay with that.

The Walking Dead #163

So much happening, especially since this is a longer issue.  Michonne and Jesus are doing something a little risky for my comfort.  On top of that, I spend every issue thinking that Andrea is going to die.  I feel like she has a giant target on her back every time she’s on the page given her current status.  Although, given the current situation, could be story arc be Rick’s final stand?  In that case, who do we follow from there?  Carl?  Andrea?  I would love reading the next 140 issues with Andrea at the center.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #50

“Chaos Theory” Part 3 (of 3). Discord’s new form threatens to take over all of Equestria! When the Elements of Harmony prove ineffective, the final gambit rests in Starlight Glimmer’s hoofs!

Special 50th issue that is two dollars more than a normal issue!  Ridiculous!  It’s even more jarring when you realize that The Walking Dead was only 25 cents this week.  I guess it’s true what they say: there are two types of comic publishers in the world.  The one that makes things cheaper to celebrate and the one that jacks the price up.  I’m sure they justified it by including the second little story with Discord and Celestia at the end, but the art is so horrifying that it doesn’t really make it worth the price.  The story itself is cute, but the art in the added chapter made my eyes want to bleed.

The conclusion to Chaos Theory was decent, I suppose.  Was that a picture of Sunset Shimmer when Starlight Glimmer said something about being friends with a mirror’?  I don’t know, the highlights of the ending was Discord breaking as many fourth walls as he possibly could.  Still not sure it was worth the additional two dollars.

11/23/16 Comic Pick of the Week – Special Thanksgiving Edition

Pick of the Week

Harley Quinn #8

“LIFE’S A BEACH”! Harley owes Ivy a trip to the Bahamas…and delivers way more than either of them expected!

Mmmmm… Girlfriends.  Literally, the entire thing is girlfriends on vacation. Also, a nudist colony filled with old people, but it’s easy to overlook that.

Reasons to pick this one up:  Girlfriends.

Reasons to avoid:  Girlfriends not being happy together.

Runner Up:

My Little Pony Friends Forever #34

Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich get trapped in a magical house that loves to party! But will it ever let them leave?

Honestly, I’m probably going to forever bitter that Cheese Sandwich, who has been in exactly one episode, got featured in a Friends Forever issue before Soarin, who has been in the show from the third episode.  However, since all I asked for was a Soarin Friends Forever with whatever pony, and they decided to give me Soarin with Rainbow Dash, I’ve decided to let it slide.  Besides, this issue is adorable.

Reasons to pick up:
Um, Pinkie Pie is my favorite, and I have a feeling I’m not alone.  There’s also a really cute story about family.

Reasons to avoid: Cheese Sandwich beat Soarin to the comics.

 Honorable Mention:

Wonder Woman #11

“THE LIES” part six! In the conclusion to this epic tale, the lie is revealed as Wonder Woman returns to Themyscira in the company of Steve Trevor to find that nothing has changed-and everything is wrong.

The art is still amazing, but that’s about the only thing it has going for it.  I’ll give it a few more issues, but this one might be dropped.

11/09/16 Comic Pick of the Week – Special Election Edition

Pick of the Week

Voltron: Legendary Defender #4(of 5)

Team Voltron’s quest to save Coran’s life gets extra-complicated when they have to face off against brain-sucking mushrooms, an ancient chess master, and a sphinx’s riddles. Can Pidge lead Voltron through these tests of brains and brawn in one piece?

Okay, so I’m super excited that this was a Pidge-centric one, because I love Pidge and this was a great look inside her mind.   The last three issues of Voltron got me shipping new pairings, so I came to this one prepared to pick up yet another Voltron ship.  I got nothing.  If anything, I got renewed Heith vibes.  I mean, Hunk says the answer to the Sphinx’s riddle is love, Lance says pretty much the same thing, and Keith gets all defensive, like, damn it, Hunk said it first, Lance.  Also, was that a tiny hint of Kallura I picked up at the beginning?  Maybe it was.  It’s one of the few Voltron ships I’m missing out on.

Oh, and how about that Shiro cover for the surprise volume 5 coming out next month?  Beautiful.

Reasons to pick this one up:  Much like we got a glance into the inner workings of Lance’s mind last month, we got to see how Pidge’s brain works this time.  Very analytically, not surprisingly.  Also, it’s good to see Pidge front and center, all things considered.

Reasons to avoid: None.  There are no reasons to avoid Voltron.  It’s amazing.  It’s definitely the distraction every one needs from time to time.

Runner Up:

Star Wars: Poe Dameron #8

NEW STORY ARC STARTS HERE! Agent Terex has sworn vengeance against Poe Dameron! But how does he always seem to know what Black Squadron is doing? Could there truly be a traitor in their midst?

Poe, how many times do I have to tell you, Kare is the traitor?  I don’t like it, and I know you certainly won’t like it, but she is the only one not in the movie.  I for one would much rather have her as a traitor who splits at the end to rejoin with the First Order than have her killed.

On the other hand, Poe is kickboxing and I’m in love.

Reasons to pick up:  Poe kickboxing in that tank top.  I swear, the art is really starting to grow on me or something.  I found it really beautiful this week, maybe because I prefer it to The Force Awakens artwork.

Reasons to avoid:  Agent Terex backstory to this point is rather predictable.  Here’s hoping something comes along to really surprise me.  Like Poe being straight.  Just kidding, I would never want that, not even to break up the monotony.

 Honorable Mention:

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic #48
“Chaos Theory” Part 1 (of 3). The craziest, most epic MLP story yet! Multiple versions of ponies are springing up around town and strange new beasts stalk the land as an orb of energy grows larger in the sky. Twilight and the Princesses have no answers… but Discord might!

My heart breaks for Fluttershy when Discord turns into Accord, it really does.  Also, I can’t help but feel that in a way My Little Pony is still playing the political field when Accord tells the Princesses that they could not possibly have a happy, united kingdom when they had ponies with such different view points, as I have no doubt that individuality will play an important part in the resolution of this story arc.  Also, I’m terribly sad that I did not manage to snag the Princess Luna cover.

425433-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Black Panther: World of Wakanda (2016-) #1
“YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE, LITTLE FLOWER. YOU DESERVED A WAKANDA THAT CHERISHED YOU.” Writer ROXANE GAY (Bad Feminst, Hunger) spins a Wakandan love story — its tenderness matched only by its brutality. You know them now as The Midnight Angels, but in this story they are just Ayo and Aneka, young women recruited to become Dora Milaje, an elite task force trained to protect the crown at all costs. What happens when your nation needs your hearts and minds, but you already gave them to each other? Illustrated by industry veteran ALITHA E. MARTINEZ (Iron Man, Black Panther). And in a special backup story, acclaimed poet YONA HARVEY (Hemming the Water) explores the true origins of The People’s mysterious leader Zenzi. Black Panther thinks he knows who Zenzi is and how she got her powers, but he only knows part of the story… Illustrated by rising star AFUA RICHARDSON (Genius).

Midnight Angels backstory, Midnight Angels backstory!  I am so hyped for this!  It might have made the pick of the week had Voltron and Poe not come out the same week.

Harley Quinn (2016-) #7

“EAT TO THIS BEAT” part 3! Harley’s punk-rock epic concludes with her and her bandmates in way too deep on their undercover mission to take down a brutal gang of thieves and murderers!

I love Harley Quinn, I really do, but I feel like this series started out strong than fizzled too quickly.  I’m inclined to blame the two week format.  Next issue is apparently the Bahamas issue I was promised, so it might be time for some redemption.

425493-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Star Wars: The Force Awakens Adaptation #6 (of 6)
It’s the Resistance vs the First Order as the attack on Starkiller Base continues! Meanwhile, Rey must use a lightsaber for the first time in a battle against Kylo Ren! Will the Resistance finally find the mysterious location of the vanished Jedi Luke Skywalker? The saga continues!

It’s over!  It’s finally over! I can stop throwing money at this thing every month in the hopes that it will get better.  Spoiler alert: It didn’t.  I love The Force Awakens, but this was basically a play by play retelling of the movie without bringing anything to the table.  It seems rather pointless to have Chuck Wendig’s name as an author credit.  I kept through to the end mostly to see if they rewrote the kiss (both the original script and the book did not have a specified location), but they didn’t.  They kept it on the forehead.  They also appear to have added more Snap and taken out Poe running after Finn’s medcart at the end, provided that’s him up Jessica Pava’s butt towards the end.  For shame.

That is it for this week’s comic pick of the week!  Hopefully sometime in the near future I’ll be able to provide an update on the weeks I missed.

10/05/16 Comic Pick of the Week

Pick of the Week

Voltron: Legendary Defender #3 (of 4)

A beautiful princess in the clutches of a vicious space dragon? Seems like a job for Lance! Voltron’s (over)confident Blue Lion pilot swings into action but pretty soon learns that this monster is not at all what it seems.

Look, these Voltron comics are amazing, and if you’ve watched the new Netflix series and you aren’t reading these, you should go out and find them.  This month takes us onto an incredible journey into Lance’s mind, and it’s just like you might expect it to be.  There’s a lot of him chasing after princesses and nearly getting choked in return, and small amounts of Lance being in love with Hunk.  No, seriously.  At the beginning Lance is so dismissive of everyone else to the point where Shiro is his right hand man, too serious but over all a good guy, Pidge is a mathematical genius, Keith is “the other guy,” but Hunk, man does he have a lot to say about Hunk.

I’m also very disappointed in the fact that no one seems to be talking about the fact that apparently Hunk is a good singer.  Did we already know this and I just missed it or do people just not care?  Because I feel like we definitely need to incorporate this into more fanworks.

Now, listen, I’m totally a Heith shipper through and through, and would like to point out to everyone that Heith week starts tomorrow and you should all go enjoy the Toasted Marshmallow™ goodness.  But, this comic has me shipping Hance like nobody’s business.  Look at how Lance waxes poetic about him.  He’s got more good things to say about Hunk than he does about the princesses they encounter.  This comic makes a very good Hance argument that I don’t feel like fighting against.

Reasons to pick this one up:  There is literally nothing about this comic that is not pure Voltron gold.  From Lance thinking the universe revolves around him to the princess dumping him in favor of fawning over Pidge instead, everything about this issue is amazing.  Not to mention Lance being really salty about Keith, and the artwork, and the fact that they never seem to stand in one place for more than one panel.  It’s quite fantastic really.  You would think that they would be able to stand still for at least the duration of a conversation.

Reasons to avoid: You’re still in denial about the season 2 trailer and  don’t want to be reminded of Voltron at the moment.  We’re all here for you.

Runner Up:

Jessica Jones (2016-) #1

She is back after a decade! A lot has changed in the Marvel Universe and there are still many secrets hiding in the shadows. Secrets only a special woman like Jessica Jones can hope to uncover. Discover the haunting secrets from Jessica’s past in this blistering new series. Alias Investigations is open for business.

I don’t know much about the Marvel NOW thing they have going on, but this has enough intrigue on it’s own to keep me interested. Spoiler alert:  And I guess I now know the fate of Misty’s arm on Luke Cage.

Reasons to pick up:  The cover art is gorgeous and I love a good mystery.

Reasons to avoid: It’s mostly just set up at this point and I’m holding onto a slim hope that it lives up to it’s promise.  I already dropped Deadpool and the Mercs for Money for not keeping my interest enough.

 Honorable Mention:

411775-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Harley Quinn (2016-) #5
“EAT TO THIS BEAT” part one! There’s been a string of brutal robberies and slayings up and down the East Coast, and the assailants are…knights on horseback?! Harley’s got a lead on the men behind the iron masks, but to find them she’s going to have to go undercover in the strangest place of all…New York’s punk scene!

It’s Harley Quinn, so it’s hard to go wrong with this one, although I could deal without the hinted return of the Joker.  Hate that guy.

416258-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_The Walking Dead #159
“THE WHISPERER WAR,” Part Three. The war rages on.

More zombies.  More people dying.  Oh, and Negan lost his one true love.  Such a shame.

9/21/2016 Comic Pick of the Week

Pick of the Week

My Little Pony: Friends Forever #32

The shiest pony who’s ever shied, Fluttershy, meets the most adventurous adventurer ever: Daring Do! When the two embark on a perilous journey together it may be up to Fluttershy to teach Daring Do the meaning of bravery!

This was a little late because I had a hard time making a decision this week.  I only picked up the two, and while neither one was necessarily bad, neither one wowed me either.  Ultimately, I went with My Little Pony because I’m a sucker for Daring Do and particularly the villains that come along with her.  I also feel a strong affinity with Fluttershy.

Reasons to pick this one up:   Daring Do stories generally don’t disappoint, even though this one is a little heavy handed with the meaning of bravery.

Reasons to avoid: It’s heavy handed with its morals, which is unsurprising given that subtlety was never the strong suit of the franchise.

Runner Up:

Harley Quinn (2016-) #4

“108 MILLION WAYS TO DIE!” Even though she hates to leave Coney Island as it rebuilds after the zombie apocalypse, Harley must set out on a journey that will take her around the world-and into the clutches of a bizarre robotic enemy! Too bad her Mecha-Harley suit didn’t fit in the overhead bin…

Harley Quinn rarely disappoints, and her quest to shut down call centers struck close to him.  Especially since I have been getting that same IRS call at least four or five times a week for the past several months.  Shut them down, Harley.  Shut them down.

Reasons to pick up:  It’s Harley Quinn.  Also, the alternate cover with her and Poison Ivy is gorgeous.  I managed to snag alternate covers for both my picks this week.

Reasons to avoid: Eh, it’s not the best volume that’s come out of this particular series so far, but at least it’s not boring.

9/7/2016 Comic Pick of the Week

Pick of the Week

Kim & Kim 2

With fugitive Tom Quilt in tow, the Fighting Kims go off in search of the mysterious Lady Babylon, only to come up short. Turning to necromancy to help find her, things go about as badly as they possibly can.

I love these two girls.  I’ve been looking forward to the second issue of this one for months.  Picked the first up on a recommendation and have never regretted it.  If you aren’t reading this one yet, I highly recommend it.  Kim & Kim both stars a transwoman and was written by a transwoman.

Reasons to pick this one up:   The art is gorgeous and the costumes are amazing.  Kim and Kim are amazing besties who are friendship aspiration goals.  The team is composed of mostly women and puts women in the front and center.  There’s also sandworms, necromancy and bounty hunting.

Reasons to avoid: There are literally no reasons not to pick this one up.  The only thing I would change is have them come out a little more frequently.  The wait was interminable.

Runner Up:

Poe Dameron #6

Poe and Agent Terex are in a race…to break out of jail! But with Black Squadron surrounded by deadly inmates…their only hope is BB-8?!?

In correction to my last post talking about this series, the blue murderbot actually belonged to Jessika Pava.  I thought it was Snap’s because I had matched the droids up with the colors on the helmets from an earlier issue, but, apparently, the droids were not color coded for mine or anyone else’s convenience.

This issue features droids, prisoners, and more spaceship battles.

Reasons to pick up:  I mean, who doesn’t love BB-8, especially when that little droid is saving the lives of everyone else in Black Squadron.  Kare is still alive, although I have good money on her being the mole.  Don’t let me down, Kare.  Don’t exist in this comic just to be Snap’s love interest.  (Side note: I actually ship Snap/Kare, but I dislike characters who exist only to be love interests.)

Reasons to avoid: Look, Snap got injured, and I don’t know if it was supposed to create dramatic tension or not, but it really didn’t since Snap is one of the people we know survives the end of the series.  Tiny little alien creature and maybe a crapton of prisoners die.

Honorable Mention

423826-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_“Ponies of Dark Water Part 3” Chaos reigns over Ponyville as normal ponies across town turn evil! It’ll be up to Spike and the Cutie Mark Crusaders, with the help of an unexpected ally, to save the day!

Um, evil ponies don’t really seem that evil.  I mean, evil Rainbow Dash seemed a little cocky, but there is some truth in what she was saying.  I don’t know if I would go as far to say that she was faster than all the Wonderbolts combined, but it’s a pretty safe bet to say that she is faster than all the other Wonderbolts.  Also, I love when Evil Twilight is a thing.  It’s one of my favorite parts about the third Equestria Girls movie.

397953-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_“DIE LAUGHING” part 3! In this concluding chapter, Coney Island threatens to collapse completely under a tidal wave of zombies! Harley’s got a lead on a cure-but what’s it going to take to administer it to a thousand flesh-hungry fiends? Here’s hoping Poison Ivy has an idea…

Unfortunately, the zombies are gone, but on the plus side, the teenage runaway alien is going to be okay after he gets fused back together by his parents.   Poison Ivy and Harley are back together again, and going to the Bahamas soon.

404779-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_“THE WHISPERER WAR” Part Two. The war rages on.

Zombies, zombies, zombies, and some guy’s  a dick.  I skipped about 150 volumes before I started reading, so I’m a little behind and am still not entirely sure who is who.
