Black Panther (2016-) #10

RETURN OF THE QUEEN! Shuri is reborn anew… New powers, a new codename and a new target: the Midnight Angels. The newly independent Dora Milaje make their final accord with Tetu and The People…T’Challa takes an audience with the voice of dissent, Changamire. But will both men finally listen to reason?

I can’t believe this is ending.  All the comics I read are ending.  At least I still have The Walking Dead.  Kirkman’s ego is so huge that I’ll probably have The Walking Dead until he dies.  (Note: this is why I will not be surprised when I find out that The Walking Dead has a set end day on Wednesday.)  Ironically, I picked this up the same week as I picked up the second trade of Shuri being the Black Panther, having just been introduced to that arc through the half off table at Pittsburgh Comics.  Now I just need to pick up the first trade to finish that story arc.

In the meantime, I am going to pretend that this is not ending, as this was my first superhero comic, and eagerly await the movie.

Grimm Vol. 2 #5

The race for the artifact is on and Juliette is charging head first at her real enemy, Adalind! This action-packed finale is filled with chases, fights, and maybe even a few explosions that need to be seen to be believed!

I’ll admit, I have not watched Grimm for a very long time.  Certain events that transpired, but more importantly how the events were handled in the aftermath, left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t watched a single episode since.   I hear its been cancelled.  Much as I once loved the show, I can’t say I’m sorry to see it go.

Grimm Vol 2 on the other hand highlighted everything I loved about Grimm in the first place.  Not only that, it focused entirely on the women of the show, who did get a lot of the short end of the stick during airtime.  It also covers the pivotal time period in which Juliette is just coming into her powers, which probably should have been covered on the show.  I guess that’s the beauty of these tie-in comics.  They can fix things that their respective shows/movies fail to address.  Also, yes, Juliette, punch that bitch!

Wonder Woman (2016-) #15

“THE TRUTH” part one! Diana has finally seen the full scope of how her life and history have been transformed…unfortunately, the knowledge has driven her completely insane!

I love the character of Wonder Woman.  I really do.  But she’s not the only one being driven completely insane.  This whole every other issue story line is driving me absolutely batty!  It’s not a reader friendly format, and I’m still wondering if its worth buying them like this or if I should just save up my reward money and buy the trades as they’re released.

Reborn #4

MILLAR & CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. Bonnie and Tom are chained and dragged to Black Wish Mountain, where they are confronted by a vengeful fi gure from the past. Will they escape to fi nd Harry, or be turned over to Lord Golgotha?

Again with the cat thing?  Seriously, are all cats like this or was it just this one dickish cat that happens to be like this.  I do like that for being a savior figure, Bonnie is not above mass murder.  Sure, they’re evil, but it does add a nice bit of moral ambiguity to the character.  Which is something that is sorely needed at this point.

I’m still standing by my earlier assertion that her husband is evil somewhere in the afterlife.  In fact, what are the chances that he’s going to be that horned evil dude?

Nice ending…. Not.  That was completely horrifying and I’m going to pretend that it never happened.

Friends Forever #36

This is it!  This is what I’ve been waiting for!  I’ve waited years for this! (Years might be a slight exaggeration.)  Ever since I started reading the Friends Forever series, I wanted one with Soarin.  Rainbow Dash was my preferred partner, but I was willing to accept someone else.  Maybe Quibblepants.  That would have been amazing.  My checklist for a Soarin Friends Forever comic included:

  • Soarin rescuing someone, preferably Rainbow Dash if she was the other pony involved
  • Soarin’s Wonderbolt status being called into question
  • Soarin being an all around badass

Oh, look, I got all three of my wishes!

Soarin did rescue Rainbow Dash (finally!) in one of the most beautiful panels that I’ve ever seen.  I’ve been waiting a very long time for Soarin to be the one to do the rescuing.

tumblr_inline_oi5w91o9dv1tjjecv_540

We also had Soarin questioning his own Wonderbolt status, thinking that he’s no longer good enough due to Spitfire trying to replace him during the Equestria games and an off screen show that landed him in a tailspin.   The whole incident leads to a scene with Rainbow Dash offering him encouragement where they’ve taken refugee inside a cave in a dialogue that’s sounds a lot like “You’re the best,” “No, you’re the best.”

It’s a great exchange, though, because the only pony we’ve seen go through Wonderbolt initiation is Rainbow Dash, and I don’t think there was ever a doubt in anyone’s mind that she was going to be a Wonderbolt.  She’s a great flyer, and it’s something that comes easy to her.  Which is great.  But Soarin’s story is a bit different.  Soarin’s story is of a pony who knew he wanted to be a Wonderbolt but he always had to push himself a littler harder if he wanted to be ranked among the best.  And that’s an amazing things for kids to learn.  That natural talent helps, but not everyone is going to pursue their dreams with little ease.  It’s okay if the path you take to get there is a little harder, if you have to work a little more, if you have to dedicate your time to it.    And that it doesn’t diminish your accomplishment.  I mean, Soarin’s the second in command, and Rainbow Dash even calls him the heart of the Wonderbolts.

As for bullet point number three, he was taking on all those dangerous deliveries and did that amazing dive to save Rainbow Dash.

No ships sank or sailed in this issue.  If anything, they decided to go the OT3 route.

Ah, yes, another series that is ending.  That seemed to be the theme of most of the stuff I picked up this week.

Next week is a very special discount issue of The Walking Dead!  I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts about it.

Reborn #2

MILLAR and CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. After her death, Bonnie is reborn in Adystria and has a sword thrust into her hand. As the evils within the Dark Lands get stronger, she is Adystria’s only hope: their savior.

My biggest worry when a new series comes out is how quickly it will fizzle out.  Reborn has continued on strong in the second volume, with enough withheld on how this afterlife works to keep readers coming back for more.   Although, I feel like someone has something against cats, because dogs get to come back as giant armored friends to help you find your missing loved ones, but cats are evil cause you took their testicles.  I’m rather hoping this was just for that particular cat and dog and not all dogs end up in the happy reunion place while all cats turn out evil when they’re dead.

Also, I’m calling it now: her husband went to the bad place.  Don’t have any theories about the mother yet, but give me another issue or so.

Reasons to pick this one up:  It continues to explore an interesting alternative to the afterlife that I still want to sign up for.  I want more details into this universe and how it works and why people enter it at different ages, not necessarily the age they die at and likewise how aging works in this place.

Reasons to avoid:  The cat thing.  People take dog’s testicles too you know.  I mean, are we assuming Cujo got a free pass into the good place just because he was a dog?

Jessica Jones #2

There are so many mysteries to discover in the Marvel Universe and Jessica’s new case may be the most dangerous one. No spoilers, but some of the biggest questions about the new Marvel NOW! are about to be revealed in this very comic.

I had my doubts about this series because they’re pushing the Marvel NOW angle, saying that the greatest reveals of Marvel NOW are going to be in this comic, and I’m not all that interested in reading the entirety of Marvel NOW.  I just don’t have that kind of money, and I don’t know why I should have to suffer just because I happen to dig Jessica Jones.

Thankfully, the Marvel NOW does not seem to be intruding too much on the plot of Jessica Jones.  There’s enough mystery to keep me interested without asking me to read the other series (yet).  That and the beautiful covers push Jessica Jones into the runner up category this week.

Reasons to pick up:  The covers are gorgeous, and the plot is interesting enough to keep me hooked.

Reasons to avoid:  Why can’t Jessica stick the super hero landing?

 Honorable Mention:

422391-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Assassin’s Creed: Locus #3
The streets of Victorian London are a much darker place than the avenues of new York… as Pinkerton agent Tommy Greyling is finding out! Hot on the tail of a murderer, it seems there’s more to this mystery than meets the eye. Luckily for Tommy, he’s in the hands of the Assassin Brotherhood!

I have continued with my streak of collecting the Evie centric covers and hope to get the last one as well.  However, there is not nearly enough Evie in the actual comics, and considering that was why I wanted them in the first place, they’re not really delivering the way I had hoped.

426619-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Grimm Vol. 2 #3
When things have completely spiraled out of control, who can you call on to help set them right? Why the woman who is responsible for putting you in a coma, sleeping with your boyfriend, and turning you into a hexenbiest, of course! Juliette must fight her urges to get feral on Adalind in order to save innocent lives in the team-up we never expected to see.

One of the reasons I quit the show was because of the way the show responded to what Adalind did to Nick.  The fact that the comics are willing to call a spade a spade made me contemplate this as the pick of the week.  But, much as I love to see the women of Grimm coming front and center, I still don’t like Adalind all that much, so it got knocked down to the honorable mention section.

425523-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Black Panther (2016-) #8
VOYAGE INTO THE DJALIA T’Challa’s research and technology takes him to a place that not even THE CREW can follow: THE DJALIA, Wakanda’s collective memory. Just getting there was hard, but finding SHURI across their nation’s past, present and future might turn out to be impossible. Even so, the strain on his Soul-Stalker abilities might tear him apart before he gets very far…

That whole Marvel NOW thing didn’t last very long, so I’m glad I didn’t have to worry about that.  Marvel wants too much of my money, and I’m just not down with that.  Don’t they know I’m broke with student loans to pay?

In an attempt to keep this spoiler free, I will simply have to insist that you read this one.

Reborn #1

MARK MILLAR & GREG CAPULLO join forces to create the smash hit sci-fi / fantasy story of the year: REBORN. Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you—the good and the bad.

Welcome to a world where instead of going to heaven or hell when you die, you get to go to a High Fantasy AU of your life!  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I want to be signed up for that.  Fighting dragons, defending the people, that sounds like my type of afterlife.

Reasons to pick this one up:  There’s a killer story line waiting to happen.  There’s also dragons, and sword fights, and the art is fantastic.

Reasons to avoid: It might be a bit too graphic for some people.

Grimm Vol 2 #1 and #2

What do Juliette, Adalind, Truble and Rosalee have in common? They’re the women in the life of Portland’s own Grimm, Nick Burkhardt, and they’re about to cross paths in a way they’d never expect! Set during the tumultuous fourth season of the hit television show, Juliette’s struggles to come to terms with becoming a Hexenbiest draw her into conflict with a new Wessen threat, and she finds she has nowhere to turn except her most hated enemy, Adalind! That’s right, the woman who impersonated Juliette and slept with Nick! Written by Caitlin Kittredge, the author behind the Nocturne City and Iron Codex novels (among many others) and Coffin Hill for Vertigo, with art by rising newcomer Maria Sanapo!

Juliette may have the incredible power of a Hexenbiest, but not the control that can allow her to trust herself, and when her and Rosalee’s investigation into a string of murderous Wesen art thefts requires intimidation, who better to take lead than the one Grimm left in Portland, Trubel!

So the reason these are both listed here as the runner ups is because a few weeks ago I neglected to pick up the first one not realizing that it was the tie-in to the show that I had been looking forward to.  Grimm Vol 2 follows the women in Grimm as they face their own challenges without Nick or any of the other male main characters.  Except Wu.  Wu makes a fantastic appearance.  There was also mention of calling Monroe, but he never actually showed up.  Damn shame too, since Monroe is my favorite.

Reasons to pick up:  It’s the women of Grimm and also covers the period during Season 4 when Juliette was still discovering her Hexenbiest powers.  It really covers a lot of stuff with what was going on in Juliette’s head that probably should have been included in the show.

Reasons to avoid: To be fair, the art, while beautiful on it’s own, made it hard for me to recognize the characters.  That was one reason I didn’t pick the first issue up when it came out because I didn’t recognize any of them on the cover.  (The second issue I recognized Trubel right away, which was how I knew I had screwed up the last time).

 Honorable Mention:

411795-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Wonder Woman #8

Year One Interlude: Young Barbara Ann Minerva is thrust on a quest for answers to the Amazons’ most ancient secrets.

Well, that at least helps me with some back story that I am sorely short on.

413978-_sx1280_ql80_ttd_Star Wars: The Force Awakens #5

Rey has been captured by the evil First Order! Meanwhile, Finn plans a mission with the Resistance in order to save Rey and destroy Starkiller Base! Only the vicious Kylo Ren stands in their way…

Five volumes in I might as well buy all of it now.  But, oh, look, cute little Stormpilot and FinnRey hug.  I see no difference.
