My Little Pony Friendship is Magic #51

Twilight is startled to find that the most important history books in Equestria are going missing. Will she and her friends be able to uncover the identity of the mysterious new villain responsible?

I found Shiro!  He vanished into the parallel world of Equestria and managed to regrow back his right foreleg.  All joking aside, I’m really enjoying this new villain.  Book magic seems pretty unique in this world, and I’m interested in seeing where this is going.  Even more interested in seeing in how this is going to tie into Season 7.  Clearly Shadowlock is secretly Shiro and his attempts to erase Equestria’s history have something to do with getting him back to his own reality.  I will never let this joke die, so expect to see a lot of this in the next couple months.

Deadpool the Duck #4 (of 5)

Things are getting out of control for Deadpool the Duck! Howard has finally escaped the Negative Zone to regain control of his shared body. But when Roxxon attacks, where are Deadpool’s mercenary skills when he needs them?

Oh no, how ever will they get back into their original bodies.  All is lost.  I’m just kidding.  This was a fun little side trip, but I’m not exactly sad to see it’s over.  My wallet is going to be very happy to get one less ongoing issue.

Wonder Woman #17

“THE TRUTH” part two! As Wonder Woman picks up the pieces of her shattered psyche, Barbara Ann Minerva walks into the devil’s lair to defend her…or is she being led into Godwatch’s trap?

Every time I think I’m done with Wonder Woman it sucks me right back in.

Deadpool the Duck #3 of 5

Rocket Raccoon? Roxxon? Where are Wade Wilson and Howard the Duck? On a mission to get their own bodies back, of course! Deadpool the Duck is in over his head (tail feathers?) in this out-of-world adventure!

I enjoy this much more than the last Deadpool series I started.  In fact, the last one I stopped after about three issues and don’t intend to keep those if I could sell them.  Deadpool the Duck, however, I’ll probably keep on through the end, especially since there’s only two more.

Their constant bickering makes the comic entertaining, if nothing else, and there’s always the question of what’s going to happen to Rocket Raccoon.  If they don’t manage to cure him of the rabies, will Wade Wilson make him into a rug?  A fancy Davy Crocket hat?  Perhaps we’ll never know.  Mostly because I don’t think they would actually kill off Rocket Raccoon in a Deadpool comic.

Star Wars Doctor Aphra #4

Aphra’s father has led her straight into danger – of course. Her business on Yavin 4 concluded, Aphra journeys off…in search of one of the most powerful weapons imaginable!

I love Doctor Aphra so much, I almost want to investigate the Darth Vader comics.  Almost, but not quite.  Perhaps it has something to do with my desire to see Star Wars leading ladies that are not white brunettes, but unfortunately, it looks like that’s what we’re stuck with in the movies for the foreseeable.  And people wonder why I’m starting to like the expanded universe more than the actual movies.  Here’s a few reasons: Doctor Aphra, Sinjir, Shara Bey, Kare Kun, Poe Dameron (who admittedly is in the movies, but even some fans don’t think he’s that important to the overall plot).

Doctor Aphra and her murderbots are causing mass chaos on Yavin 4, just the way it should be.  You know who else has murderbots?  Snap, Jessika Pava, Cassian Andor.  I love murderbots almost as much as they do.

Torchwood 2.1

Gwen Cooper has been pulled away from her domestic bliss by the reappearance of Captain Jack Harkness, and his companions, the crew of the alien tech-filled ship the Ice Maiden. No sooner has Gwen rejoined the team, than they has to contend with jetski-riding ninjas, a mystery involoving an alien race known as the Navigators, the return of the roguish Captain John Hart, and the revelation that the current Lady of Torchwood House, Karina is far from what she seems. As we rejoin events in the midst of a stand-off, things are more than a little tense…

I really love Torchwood, okay?  Some people seemed surprised by that fact, and I don’t understand why.  Torchwood is amazing.  Also, a lot of the comics I read have a common element, so cookies to anyone who can figure out what that is.  Most of them.  There are a few outliers that don’t fit the pattern, but mostly they have the one major thing in common.  Oh, and since I love Torchwood so much, I would continue to but this one even if it sucked.  Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.  Although I have discovered that there are Torchwood books that I am missing, and I aim to fix that as soon as possible.

Oh, it bears mentioning that this is Torchwood back when it was good, not when they decided to screw everything up.  We love that they specifically tell you what trade you’re buying from.  I wish all comics would do that instead of having me guess all the time.  Is it four, is it six, is it five, seven?  No one knows.

Wonder Woman (2016-) #16

“GODWATCH” part one! Since the moment Wonder Woman arrived in our world, Godwatch has been waiting. But who are they, and what do they want? Diana’s journey to the truth continues with the origin of what may prove to be her greatest enemies.

I love Wonder Woman, but I’ve almost had about enough of this.  I’m lost now.  I figured that it would get easier to follow the further into the storyline we got, but instead it just got more confusing.  This is the opposite of progress.  But at this point it’s like, I’m sixteen volumes in, do I really want to quit now?

Jessica Jones #5

Jessica made some tough choices to save her husband and child from the clutches of the latest hateful madness that has hit the Marvel Universe. But was it enough? Another all-new chapter from Jessica’s original creators. The new adventures of Jessica Jones that you’ll only find right here.

Ah yess, I knew Jessica Jones wouldn’t let me down!  I was a little hesitant about this series at first for a number of reasons.  One, my experience with the character was limited to the Netflix show.  Two, they kept saying about how this was an integral part of the Marvel Now universe and I wanted nothing to do with that.  I just wanted to read a comic about Jessica Jones, not break my wallet.

I’m so glad I decided to stick with this one, because at volume five, towards the end of the first trade, things really start to get good.  The woman’s husband that she was hired to track in the first volume has killed his wife, and his reasoning might just destroy the fabric of the universe.  At least for Jessica.  Of course, her friends in the Avengers already started taking care of that on their own, but the real question is, how far down the rabbit hole are we going to go?

That’s it for this week!  Tune in next week for more My Little Pony, some more Walking Dead with maybe some death this time, and the answer to our most burning question, will Poe Dameron ever return or are we going to be stuck with this Han Solo knock off til someone finally pulls the plug?

Black Panther (2016-) #10

RETURN OF THE QUEEN! Shuri is reborn anew… New powers, a new codename and a new target: the Midnight Angels. The newly independent Dora Milaje make their final accord with Tetu and The People…T’Challa takes an audience with the voice of dissent, Changamire. But will both men finally listen to reason?

I can’t believe this is ending.  All the comics I read are ending.  At least I still have The Walking Dead.  Kirkman’s ego is so huge that I’ll probably have The Walking Dead until he dies.  (Note: this is why I will not be surprised when I find out that The Walking Dead has a set end day on Wednesday.)  Ironically, I picked this up the same week as I picked up the second trade of Shuri being the Black Panther, having just been introduced to that arc through the half off table at Pittsburgh Comics.  Now I just need to pick up the first trade to finish that story arc.

In the meantime, I am going to pretend that this is not ending, as this was my first superhero comic, and eagerly await the movie.

Grimm Vol. 2 #5

The race for the artifact is on and Juliette is charging head first at her real enemy, Adalind! This action-packed finale is filled with chases, fights, and maybe even a few explosions that need to be seen to be believed!

I’ll admit, I have not watched Grimm for a very long time.  Certain events that transpired, but more importantly how the events were handled in the aftermath, left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven’t watched a single episode since.   I hear its been cancelled.  Much as I once loved the show, I can’t say I’m sorry to see it go.

Grimm Vol 2 on the other hand highlighted everything I loved about Grimm in the first place.  Not only that, it focused entirely on the women of the show, who did get a lot of the short end of the stick during airtime.  It also covers the pivotal time period in which Juliette is just coming into her powers, which probably should have been covered on the show.  I guess that’s the beauty of these tie-in comics.  They can fix things that their respective shows/movies fail to address.  Also, yes, Juliette, punch that bitch!

Wonder Woman (2016-) #15

“THE TRUTH” part one! Diana has finally seen the full scope of how her life and history have been transformed…unfortunately, the knowledge has driven her completely insane!

I love the character of Wonder Woman.  I really do.  But she’s not the only one being driven completely insane.  This whole every other issue story line is driving me absolutely batty!  It’s not a reader friendly format, and I’m still wondering if its worth buying them like this or if I should just save up my reward money and buy the trades as they’re released.

Reborn #4

MILLAR & CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. Bonnie and Tom are chained and dragged to Black Wish Mountain, where they are confronted by a vengeful fi gure from the past. Will they escape to fi nd Harry, or be turned over to Lord Golgotha?

Again with the cat thing?  Seriously, are all cats like this or was it just this one dickish cat that happens to be like this.  I do like that for being a savior figure, Bonnie is not above mass murder.  Sure, they’re evil, but it does add a nice bit of moral ambiguity to the character.  Which is something that is sorely needed at this point.

I’m still standing by my earlier assertion that her husband is evil somewhere in the afterlife.  In fact, what are the chances that he’s going to be that horned evil dude?

Nice ending…. Not.  That was completely horrifying and I’m going to pretend that it never happened.

Friends Forever #36

This is it!  This is what I’ve been waiting for!  I’ve waited years for this! (Years might be a slight exaggeration.)  Ever since I started reading the Friends Forever series, I wanted one with Soarin.  Rainbow Dash was my preferred partner, but I was willing to accept someone else.  Maybe Quibblepants.  That would have been amazing.  My checklist for a Soarin Friends Forever comic included:

  • Soarin rescuing someone, preferably Rainbow Dash if she was the other pony involved
  • Soarin’s Wonderbolt status being called into question
  • Soarin being an all around badass

Oh, look, I got all three of my wishes!

Soarin did rescue Rainbow Dash (finally!) in one of the most beautiful panels that I’ve ever seen.  I’ve been waiting a very long time for Soarin to be the one to do the rescuing.

tumblr_inline_oi5w91o9dv1tjjecv_540

We also had Soarin questioning his own Wonderbolt status, thinking that he’s no longer good enough due to Spitfire trying to replace him during the Equestria games and an off screen show that landed him in a tailspin.   The whole incident leads to a scene with Rainbow Dash offering him encouragement where they’ve taken refugee inside a cave in a dialogue that’s sounds a lot like “You’re the best,” “No, you’re the best.”

It’s a great exchange, though, because the only pony we’ve seen go through Wonderbolt initiation is Rainbow Dash, and I don’t think there was ever a doubt in anyone’s mind that she was going to be a Wonderbolt.  She’s a great flyer, and it’s something that comes easy to her.  Which is great.  But Soarin’s story is a bit different.  Soarin’s story is of a pony who knew he wanted to be a Wonderbolt but he always had to push himself a littler harder if he wanted to be ranked among the best.  And that’s an amazing things for kids to learn.  That natural talent helps, but not everyone is going to pursue their dreams with little ease.  It’s okay if the path you take to get there is a little harder, if you have to work a little more, if you have to dedicate your time to it.    And that it doesn’t diminish your accomplishment.  I mean, Soarin’s the second in command, and Rainbow Dash even calls him the heart of the Wonderbolts.

As for bullet point number three, he was taking on all those dangerous deliveries and did that amazing dive to save Rainbow Dash.

No ships sank or sailed in this issue.  If anything, they decided to go the OT3 route.

Ah, yes, another series that is ending.  That seemed to be the theme of most of the stuff I picked up this week.

Next week is a very special discount issue of The Walking Dead!  I’m looking forward to sharing my thoughts about it.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron (2016-) #10

Poe and Threepio’s covert mission comes to an end! Can they escape with their informant intact? Or will Terex’s past come back to haunt them?

Poe Dameron was the reason why I started reading comics in the first place.  It was the reason why I sought out my local comic store so I could  read them on a monthly basis without the internet spoiling everything for me.  I was disappointed this week.  Consistent characterization must not be Soule’s strong suit.  Last issue, Poe was all for droids being valued members of society and all droids were his friends, and the rest of his squad is definitely his new family.  This month he’s threatening to give an uncooperative robot a robo-lobotomy and actually leaves one of his squad mates behind.  What the hell, Poe?  What happened to you from last month?  Does a stun blaster to the chest also cause personality disorder or is the writing just that bad?  There are no highlights to this month.  I want to purge this month’s issue from existence.

Jessica Jones (2016-) #4

Jessica Jones latest case has revealed a new hidden evil in the Marvel Universe. An evil so terrifying she was willing to rip her family apart to save them from it. But was the sacrifice enough? Another all-new blistering chapter of Marvel’s premier detective.

I will admit that I fell in love with Jessica Jones after watching the show on Netflix.  I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I picked up the comic, but I quickly fell in love with the design of the covers.  And after the first four volumes, I can definitely say this is the Marvel comic I look forward to the most every month.  It started off slow, but things really started to pick up this time around.

Wonder Woman (2016-) #14

“YEAR ONE” conclusion! With Steve Trevor by her side, Diana faces the God of War and embraces her destiny as Wonder Woman!

I’ve been on the fence with Wonder Woman for a few weeks now.  Do I continue?  Do I drop it because I’m broke and I’m not entirely sure if the biweekly format is worth it?  Will things ever start to come together?  Am I going to go see the movie this summer even with D.C.’s horrible record?  The answer to most of these questions remains to be seen, but at least this issue is worth it.  Or at least the battle sequence involving Wonder Woman, the patrons, and Ares.  I’m still interested in seeing where this is going, and I have discovered a soft spot for the character.  So it hasn’t been dropped yet.

God Country #1

SERIES PREMIERE. Emmet Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia, isn’t just a problem for his children—his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home—as well as the surrounding West Texas town—a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. The enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face the otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State…“So much fun to watch creators fi nd that next level. Go, Cates, go!”—BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS

I first heard about God Country a few weeks ago when the workers at the comic book shop were talking about it.  However, they failed to say anything about the plot or what made it so interesting so I was very much on the fence when this one came out.  The art was what really sold me.  It’s different from what I’m used to, but utterly gorgeous.  The fact that we’re dealing with an apocalyptic story of biblical proportions is an added bonus.

“LIFE’S A BEACH”! Harley owes Ivy a trip to the Bahamas…and delivers way more than either of them expected!

Mmmmm… Girlfriends.  Literally, the entire thing is girlfriends on vacation. Also, a nudist colony filled with old people, but it’s easy to overlook that.

Reasons to pick this one up:  Girlfriends.

Reasons to avoid:  Girlfriends not being happy together.

My Little Pony Friends Forever #34

Pinkie Pie and Cheese Sandwich get trapped in a magical house that loves to party! But will it ever let them leave?

Honestly, I’m probably going to forever bitter that Cheese Sandwich, who has been in exactly one episode, got featured in a Friends Forever issue before Soarin, who has been in the show from the third episode.  However, since all I asked for was a Soarin Friends Forever with whatever pony, and they decided to give me Soarin with Rainbow Dash, I’ve decided to let it slide.  Besides, this issue is adorable.

Reasons to pick up:
Um, Pinkie Pie is my favorite, and I have a feeling I’m not alone.  There’s also a really cute story about family.

Reasons to avoid: Cheese Sandwich beat Soarin to the comics.

“THE LIES” part six! In the conclusion to this epic tale, the lie is revealed as Wonder Woman returns to Themyscira in the company of Steve Trevor to find that nothing has changed-and everything is wrong.

Reborn #1

MARK MILLAR & GREG CAPULLO join forces to create the smash hit sci-fi / fantasy story of the year: REBORN. Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you—the good and the bad.

Welcome to a world where instead of going to heaven or hell when you die, you get to go to a High Fantasy AU of your life!  I don’t know about the rest of you, but I want to be signed up for that.  Fighting dragons, defending the people, that sounds like my type of afterlife.

Reasons to pick this one up:  There’s a killer story line waiting to happen.  There’s also dragons, and sword fights, and the art is fantastic.

Reasons to avoid: It might be a bit too graphic for some people.

Runner Up:

Grimm Vol 2 #1 and #2

What do Juliette, Adalind, Truble and Rosalee have in common? They’re the women in the life of Portland’s own Grimm, Nick Burkhardt, and they’re about to cross paths in a way they’d never expect! Set during the tumultuous fourth season of the hit television show, Juliette’s struggles to come to terms with becoming a Hexenbiest draw her into conflict with a new Wessen threat, and she finds she has nowhere to turn except her most hated enemy, Adalind! That’s right, the woman who impersonated Juliette and slept with Nick! Written by Caitlin Kittredge, the author behind the Nocturne City and Iron Codex novels (among many others) and Coffin Hill for Vertigo, with art by rising newcomer Maria Sanapo!

Juliette may have the incredible power of a Hexenbiest, but not the control that can allow her to trust herself, and when her and Rosalee’s investigation into a string of murderous Wesen art thefts requires intimidation, who better to take lead than the one Grimm left in Portland, Trubel!

So the reason these are both listed here as the runner ups is because a few weeks ago I neglected to pick up the first one not realizing that it was the tie-in to the show that I had been looking forward to.  Grimm Vol 2 follows the women in Grimm as they face their own challenges without Nick or any of the other male main characters.  Except Wu.  Wu makes a fantastic appearance.  There was also mention of calling Monroe, but he never actually showed up.  Damn shame too, since Monroe is my favorite.

Reasons to pick up:  It’s the women of Grimm and also covers the period during Season 4 when Juliette was still discovering her Hexenbiest powers.  It really covers a lot of stuff with what was going on in Juliette’s head that probably should have been included in the show.

Reasons to avoid: To be fair, the art, while beautiful on it’s own, made it hard for me to recognize the characters.  That was one reason I didn’t pick the first issue up when it came out because I didn’t recognize any of them on the cover.  (The second issue I recognized Trubel right away, which was how I knew I had screwed up the last time).

Wacky Raceland (2016-) #4

Our heroes head to the radioactive remains of Las Vegas for a little R&R between races, hoping for a jackpot of ammunition to add to their dwindling supplies. Instead, they arouse the ire of the ganglord Neon Caesar, who’s got an ax to grind with Red. Meanwhile, Muttley and his vehicles are lost in the labyrinthine sewers beneath the streets when the gangs of Vegas unite to eradicate the Racers. Our heroes must go it alone against the combined might of the Caesars, the Pharaohs, the Clowns, and the terrifying Combovers, who have great weapons. Terrific weapons. Really, they have the best weapons.

With Kim & Kim and Wacky Raceland coming out the same day, I thought I was going to have a touch decision on my hands.  Turns out, I needn’t have worried.  Wacky Raceland has a Trump impression.  The best Trump impression.  Really, you should check it out.

Reasons to pick this one up:   The impassioned speech by the leader of the gang, the Combovers, makes this one a must read any day of the week.  Not to mention the fact that the cars are sentient actually became relevant this week.

Reasons to avoid: It’s ending, far too soon for my liking.  I could have read at least several dozen more volumes before I would have grown sick of it.

Runner Up:

Kim & Kim #3

Interstellar-cowboy life just keeps getting worse for our badass besties. On the hunt for Lady Babylon, Kim & Kim get shot out the sky by an unknown enemy and end up stranded on the frozen world of Never-Look-Back. But what they find there might be the breakthrough they’ve been looking for.

There was no universe in which Kim & Kim would not be the runner up if it hadn’t made the pick of the week.  If you’re not reading this series, I don’t know what you’re waiting for.  Female bounty hunters.  Mechanical gorillas.  Alien life forms.  What’s not to love?

Reasons to pick up:  Squad goals!

Reasons to avoid: None.  None whatsoever.

Honorable Mention:

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic #46
It’s election season in Ponyville and Mayor Mare looks to have the race in the bag. But when Filthy Rich throws his hat in the ring, all bets are off!

My Little Pony also decided to take on the 2016 presidential election with  business pony Filthy Rich running against career politician Mayor Mare because he thought politics would be better run by a business pony.  I’m glad the comic industry is getting so much mileage out of this.

Assassin’s Creed: Locus #1
Brand new story set in the stunning world of Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate! Dive into the sordid underworld of Victorian London, and the memories of New Yorker, Tommy Greyling, as he teams up with Evie Frye and Henry Green to search for a Piece of Eden that has the potential to change the world!

Evie Fyre is my favorite assassin, and I think this is only supposed to be four volumes long ,so I figured it couldn’t hurt to check it out.

Wonder Woman (2016-) #7
“THE LIES” part 4! One god down-how many more to go? Diana takes another step closer to the truth, and Steve Trevor confronts his past!

Still like the art on this one better than Year One, but it looks like the two are going to start melding together soon.
